Winter passes

Thaw

Over the land freckled with snow half-thawed

The speculating rooks at their nests cawed

And saw fom the elm-tops, delicate as flower of grass,

What we below could not see. Winter pass.

by Edward Thomas.

Edward Thomas has always been important to me, one of my favourite poets ever since my Headmistress Hilda Mary Hunt introduced me to his writing.

My topiary heart

My topiary heart in the snow.
My topiary heart in the snow.

Some snow is still lying on the hills behind the house but at sea level,    spring is asserting itself.   The topiary heart gave refuge to the sparrows in the snow.  I am so glad I didn’t cut down my topiary heart, a token of a former love affair, when my heart  was broken but tended it.  Both hearts thrive now.
