Digging

Today I think

Only with scents, -scents dead leaves yield,

And bracken, and wild carrot’s seed,

And the square mustard field;

Odours that rise

When the spade wounds the root of tree

Rose, currant, raspberry, or goutweed,

Rhubarb or celery;

The smoke’s smell,  too,

Flowing from where the bonfire burns

The dead, the waste, the dangerous

And all to sweetness turns.

It is enough

To smell,  to crumble the dark earth,

While the robin sings over again

Sad songs of Autumn mirth.

The Notebook

I watched The Notebook a little while ago and one scene was breathtakingly beautiful. The lovers row through a flooded wood and are surrounded by white geese.

Ray Gosling as Noah did the Patrick Swayze love lift which is now de rigeur for all screen lovers. All embellishments  such as Noah doing it climbing stairs with jeans around his ankles ( anyone who has tried climbing stairs in a nighty that is too long knows that that is probably impossible!)  shows that Patrick’s version is still the best.
